Muffin Break Named Fifth Most Innovative Company
For Our Innovative Training Techniques
Muffin Break has been named fifth most innovative company by The Australian Financial Review.
We have redefined our training program offered to franchise partners of the network and their teams in store and how information is relayed.
“Inventium is proud to announce the 2020 Most Innovative Companies list in conjunction with AFR. The global pandemic has truly given rise to the saying ‘necessity is the mother of invention’, and we are thrilled to recognise many organisations who have successfully pivoted their offerings and relished the opportunity for change.”

Muffin Break’s innovation achievement
With many of the staff members employed working casual hours, they may not be frequently logging onto the training platform to be kept up to date with the brand’s monthly promotional activities. We identified an exponential growth of millennials working in our stores, who are technology driven in all areas of their lives, including training.
To accommodate, we sought out new training techniques and technology to introduce into the training of our franchisees and their teams to include training by way of Artificial Intelligence including Virtual Reality realms, gamification, Quick Response (QR) codes and holograms.
As an example, our training team have developed a selection of training QR codes within the brand, assisting franchise partners and their staff to have both on-demand training and micro learning available on their personal devices. The training modules available by QR codes include how to clean and use equipment, coffee, and baking training to align with our operational guidelines.
At Muffin Break, we have been able to influence franchisees by educating them with these helpful tools for training, all they need to do is scan a code and watch a video in real-time. The videos are quick and informative, and all include subtitles including Mandarin Chinese translations (to help our high percentage of ESLs). They can also scan the codes while working in store.
The innovation focuses on micro learning and take minutes to complete, depending on the task at hand for staff members, especially for casual employees. While companies discourage phone use at work, we encourage productive phone use to scan QR codes that drives our staff to on-demand learning videos. Examples include how to execute correct cleaning practices or bake the newest product offering.
So far, we have seen approximately 2,000 people engage with these innovative AI training tools to include all franchisees and their staff in every store. At a head office level, all members of the field team who support franchise partners to build their sales also need to engage in this training including the operation and marketing teams.
Muffin Break is proud to be recognised for their continued innovative approach to business, in adapting to a changing climate and adapting their system to further support their franchise partners.
